Said Mkandawire: “The construction has started and we are happy with the progress. We are sure that the August deadline the contractors gave will be met.”

Rumphi is one of the five stadiums government will construct nationwide using a K1.9 billion ($3,221,380) grant from German government.

Rumphi District Council chairperson Harry Mnyenyembe said when completed, the stadium will ease the challenges youths in the district face as result of lack of sports facilities.

Rumphi District does not have even a community football ground like other districts because the area where the facility was situated has been converted into a market.

Mnyenyembe said the stadium will have a capacity of 20 000 seats.

Local Development Fund (LDF) director of urban development Mike Moyo said government wants to promote sports in the country through infrastructure development.

Regional sports development officer (North) Georgina Msowoya said the facility has come at a right time.

She said the facility would provide a better sporting environment for the youth of Rumphi who for a long time have dreamed of better football infrastructure. n
