Russell pens year-long contract with Mzuni
Former Flames striker Russell Mwafulirwa’s dream of reviving his career has come to pass having signed a year-long contract with Mzuzu University (Mzuni) FC.
According to Mzuni FC chairperson Albert Harawa, Mwafulirwa’s contract is effective March 1 this year.
He said the former Flames forward, who has not played professional football for four years, will also be doubling as assistant coach.
Mzuni is targeting a top five finish in the 2016 TNM Super League.
They finished the 2015 TNM Super League on position 12 with 29 points at par with Dedza Young Soccer, but survived relegation, courtesy of a superior goal difference.
Commenting on Mwafulirwa’s performance during the trials, Mzuni head coach Alex Ngwira said the player demonstrated commitment.
“Mwafulirwa is still active. He is responding well in all the training sessions. He is still an asset; he is communicating well with the up-and-coming players,” he said.
Mwafulirwa said he is ready to assist the University team to achieve its goals in the 2016 TNM Super League season.
“As stated earlier, I am still fresh and ready to assist the team achieve. I am sure that people will see a good Mzuni team this season with my presence,” he said.
Mwafulirwa made a name at Silver Strikers before he was signed by South Africa’s Premier Soccer League side Jomo Cosmos in 2002.
In 2006, he moved to Ajax Cape Town where he played for two season before he was signed by Swedish team IFK Norrkoping.
He was part of the Flames squad that qualified for the 2010 Angola African Cup of Nations where he scored two goals in the group stages against Algeria and Mali.
