South African High Commissioner to Malawi Cen Mbuyane-Mokone has said the world could be a better place if all humankind committed itself to uplift the lives of the underprivileged.

She was speaking on Thursday in Lilongwe when she led a delegation of South African business community in the country in donating items worth millions of kwacha to Adziwa Orphan Care Centre in the city’s Kauma suburb.

The day also marked former South African president Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday.

The donations were made in honour of Mandela, who is also revered as a global icon.

“Mr Mandela has had an enormous amount of compassion for the most vulnerable in our society—children—hence we earmarked Adziwa for our donation in trying to emulate the great icon’s life.” she said.

The group also did domestic chores for 67 minutes at the orphan centre in dedication to the 67 years the now ailing Mandela was actively involved in improving the lives of the underprivileged.

Adziwa Orphan Care Centre has 442 children under its care.

Its project manager James Chirwa expressed gratitude for the gesture and assured the donation would go to its intended purpose.

The business community that contributed various items comprised Nedbank, Gift of the Givers, Shoprite, Game, Barloworld Equipment, PG Glass, Pannar Seed, Intercape, Multichoice, MacSteel, Metropolitan Health and Standard
Bank.
