Visiting South African Boxing Association (Sanabo) president Andile Mofu has expressed interest to partner Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) with an aim of developing amateur boxing in the Sadc region.

In an exclusive interview with Weekend Nation, Mofu confessed that the Sadc block has not been doing well in boxing at the Olympic stage hence the need to start fostering a working relationship that would strategize on how best the region can excel.boxing

“We are exploring ways of cooperation with Malawi so we can share strategies. We have done this with Botswana and now we are courting Malawi,” said Mofu.

He said though the new Maba committee is just three months in office, South Africa can still learn something from Malawi.

“We have more experience than Malawi in terms of boxing, but we think Malawi also has something to offer to us,” he said.

Maba president Justice Katika has since welcomed the initiative saying it is a great step forward if amateur boxing is to succeed.

“We are serious about developing boxing and winning medals. For us to achieve that we need to learn and work with other countries that have the experience and the will. We welcome the suggestion from South Africa on forming a working relationship,” said Katika.

Mofu, who is International Boxing Association (Aiba) Level 3 Instructor, is conducting a coaching course under the auspices of Malawi Olympic Committee. n
