SAA shuts down BT operations

South African Airways (SAA) has shut down its Blantyre operations following findings by South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) that Chileka International Airport has serious safety risks.

But director of Civil Aviation in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works Alfred Mtilatila faulted SACAA findings, arguing when they made inspections at Chileka on Monday and Tuesday, they found that important components on fire engines were functioning, but they said the fire engines are old and they would want two new ones, and not one which is available.

He said SAA has not officially written Malawi while the ministry only got the news from the media. SAA, according to Times Live online, welcomed the authority’s decision to halt operations.

The annual inspection had exposed several issues of non-compliance and these include the airport’s perimeter fence that was vandalised.
