Bicycle taxi operators on Monday staged a peaceful protest in Mzuzu to demand an end to arbitrary torture and constant confiscation of their bicycles. Around 10am, the cyclists invaded Orton Chirwa Avenue relentlessly ringing bells in a procession that told the police of their anger with the snatching of bicycles. During the demonstrations, the operators also accused their leadership of fuelling the crackdown on the cyclists in the city’s central business district by upgrading to motorcycle taxis. The picture shows the irate cyclists during the demonstrations.—JAMES CHAVULA, Mzuzu Bureau Supervisor
