Saint seeks divinity with debut

Dancehall musician Saint, who is one of the finest rising stars on the local scene, has finally released his long-awaited album Acoustic Heart.

The artist, born Yamikani Chikwawe, is primarily a reggae and dancehall artist who started recording music in 2007.

Saint, who has worked with Abstract Records, Step Up Records and Kutchira Entertainment, is also a part time DJ at MBC Radio 2 FM.

The 21-year-old Polytechnic journalism student broke onto the music scene with the chart-topping hits No Love, One Last Kiss and Ndimalakwisa.

The artist grew up listening to different types of music, but he says he chose dancehall as he found himself more comfortable expressing himself through that genre.

And in an interview with The Nation, the soft-spoken artist said the album release comes on the back of the release of two music videos—Tikudikiranji and Rise Po di Wicked.

Saint touted his music as being both mature and relevant to the ordinary Malawian.

“I know people have the impression that dancehall is foreign and people can relate to it, which is why I have added an acoustic feel to it so that Malawians can relate. Apart from that, my lyrics are mature; both youths and adults can relate to,” he said.

He added: “People who think that urban music does not tackle serious issues will pleasantly be surprised when they listen to Acoustic Heart. I tackle serious issues and I think that is what makes me unique.”

According to Saint, his album, which is a fusion of blues, reggae, jazz and Afro-pop, is being sold at Abstract Records and Saint ICT Solutions in Blantyre.

It can also be purchased on MalawiMusic.com.

He said the album will be launched alongside the DVD later this year.

“With this album, there are several videos that I plan on shooting; so I find it appropriate to launch both the CD and DVD at the same time,” he said.
