Newly elected Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) president Henry Sakala has promised to host an international title fight for celebrated South Africa-based gladiator Isaac ‘Golden Boy’ Chilemba.

“We will try to get him an international opponent so that Chilemba can fight and hope for people to watch him for the first time,” Sakala told MBC Radio One on Sunday night.

Maba will host the international fight through its professional boxing wing following the delinking of the association from the Malawi Professional Boxing Board.

Chilemba, who relocated to South Africa as an amateur in 2003, wrote MultiChoice Malawi Limited and Maba with a copy to the Sports Council seeking help for his first-ever international fight.

Hosting the high-profile fight will require top broadcasting equipment, MultiChoice sales and marketing manager Chimwemwe Nyirenda noted recently.

“I am very happy that people have given me the mandate to run boxing in the next four years. I have been in boxing in 15 years and I am happy. I will ensure that the welfare of boxers is among our priorities,” Sakala added.

During the Maba elections held at Sun Village Motel in Liwonde, Machinga, Sakala saw off the challenge of former general secretary Arthur Nathuru for the presidency.

Sakala, who replaces Ladder Chimbalanga, has completed a remarkable ascendancy from being general secretary to vice-president and now president.

Boxing promoter Mbachichi Nyirenda is the new general secretary with Elson Mankhomwa as the vice-general secretary.
