Salima communities hail Wolrec for women empowerment
Communities from Fisi in Traditional Authority (T/A) Maganga in Salima say ignorance is affecting the socio-economic empowerment of women in the area.
They said this on Thursday during the commemoration of International Day of Rural Women which Women Legal Resource Centre (Wolrec) organised.
One of the members, Adam Saidi, said awareness campaigns can unlock women’s potential to socio-economic development.
He asked men to refuse cultural beliefs that restrict women from participating in forums and groups that are helpful to the economy and their families.
“I was one of those men who stopped women from taking part in any activity. But since my wife joined study circles implemented by Worlec, my family has transformed,” he said.
Wolrec executive director Maggie Banda commended communities for helping to transform women’s lives in the area.
Salima Central Constituency member of Parliament (MP) Felix Jumbe (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) asked other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to emulate what Wolrec is doing in the area. n
