Speaking on Tuesday after inspecting some development projects in the district, CHRR civic education coordinator Thandizo Mphwiyo said she was impressed that women are empowered to take leadership positions and contribute to the country’s development.

She, however, complained that low literacy levels among women and the culture of favouring men in high positions are frustrating the women to take leadership roles.

Said Mphwiyo: “It is very impressive to discover that community leaders have created space where women can comfortably participate in both politics and economic activities. We will proceed with our awareness campaigns and civic education in order to build confidence in various women, including councillors.”

Maganga Kuluunda Ward (Salima Central Constituency) councillor Beatrice Mbewe said she would continue to work hard to develope her area. n
