Salima suspends chambo fishing

Scarcity of chambo fish in Lake Malawi has forced people of Senior Chief Kuluunda in Salima to suspend fishing at Chigolo, Lifuwu and Kanjenje for three months to allow the fish to breed.

The initiative, influenced by Salima Central member of Parliament (MP) Felix Jumbe (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) alongside Ngolowindo Youth Foundation and Senior Chief Kuluunda, comes following concerns about reckless fishing that led to reduced income due to decreased fish production.

Speaking during the enforcement ceremony on Friday, Chief Kuluunda promised to deal with anyone found breaking the ban, saying scarcity of chambo has resulted in low tourist numbers in the district.

In his remarks, Jumbe advised people in the area to start venturing in other economic activities other than fishing, saying Salima is blessed with flat land and the lake that can enable people to engage in irrigation farming.

The lake is expected to be opened to fishing by January next year. n
