Salima to host Nurses’ Day Celebrations

Events marking this year’s International Nurses’ Day will take place at Salima District Hospital on Saturday.

National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) executive director Dorothy Ngoma disclosed this to journalists in Lilongwe on Tuesday.

Said Ngoma: “Since this year we are talking about ‘Closing the Gap; From Evidence to Action’; we believe Salima deserves this honour taking into account how the district health office revolutionised its operations in the last eight years to be a shining example it is today.”

In 2004, health workers at the district hospital threatened to down their tools, citing a hazardous working environment. Months later, government intervened by rehabilitating toilets and revamped the hospital’s water system.

Ngoma said such circumstances speak volumes of the gap between evidence and action in the country’s nursing profession.

“As nurses, we have a bigger role to play in translating our studies into action for the best interest of human life despite the challenges we face. We will continue reminding each other how noble the profession is, and sacred life is.” She said.
