Sana Cricket Club put up a gallant fight during the Malawi Cricket Union (MCU) National Championship final on Sunday to snatch the crown from hosts India Sports Club (ISC) in Blantyre.

Sana made 167 runs against ISC’s 94 runs to return to their base in Lilongwe with the satisfaction of becoming national champions for the first time.

The event’s major sponsors were TNM, Protea Ryalls and International Cricket Council (ICC).

Awais Pasha proved to be the driving force in Sana’s victory as he made an individual contribution of 49 runs and took three wickets. No wonder he emerged as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP).

“I am very happy to become the MVP on top of helping my team win its first national title. Nevertheless, we were well prepared for the fight and this success does not surprise us; we deserved it,” said Pasha.

The Cricket Academy, which suffered a 132-97 runs defeat by Sana in the semifinals, found solace in having their player Gershom Mtambalika as the best bowler.

According to MCU president Vivek Ganesan, 10 teams, six from Blantyre and four from Lilongwe, took part in the annual competition and they will incorporate Mzuzu-based sides in next year’s event.
