Sand Festival accommodates fashion

Organisers of the annual Sand Music festival have announced that apart from the usual categories of the festival, this year’s event will accommodate fashion designers and models.

Over the years, fashion industry has been growing with many new designers joining the career. However, they have been left out of festivals such as Blantyre Arts Festival (BAF), Lake of Stars and Sand Music festivals where they are only allowed to sell their products at designated points.

For the first time, this year’s festival will allow fashion designers to bring many design outfits and models will parade in designs on stage.

According to the festival’s assistant coordinator Nkhwachi Mhango, displaying the fashion products at exhibitions points only is not enough.

He said it is for this reason that they have decided to allow models parade in designs.

“Design outfits look attractive when in the body and we want fashion designers to sell their products through parades. This will help many people to appreciate the products apart from allowing the designers to sell themselves because the festival attracts both local and international tourists,” said Mhango.

He said apart from the main, visual arts and acoustic music stages, they are plans to have an additional stage where the models will be parading and the outfits displayed.

Meanwhile, the organisers have said they are working on the festival’s website and all applications to participate at the festival will be done through the website.

This year, the three-day festiva which celebrates music, fashion, community and outdoor lifestyles, will take place at the Livingstonia Beach in Salima from August 29 to 31.
