SA’s Emtee to headline 2017 UMP

South Africa’s music sensation Emtee will headline this year’s Urban Music People (UMP) Festival and Awards, organisers have confirmed.

Last year, the festival was headlined by a Malawian-born Afro-Pop singer and record producer currently based in South Africa, Gemini Major.

According to the organisers of this year’s UMP Festival and Awards Nde’feyo Entertainment and Nzika Arts, Emtee is billed to perform at both UMP Awards Gala Night on November 18 at Bingu International Convention Centre (Bicc) in Lilongwe and UMP Festival on November 19 at Blantyre Sports Club.

Billed to perform: Emtee

“We are pleased to announce the engagement of South Africa’s rapper Emtee as this year’s festival headliner. Emtee will also perform at the Awards Gala Night in Lilongwe,” said Ken ‘Zizwa’ Limwame, chief executive officer (CEO) of UMP Festival.

Emtee is a major name in African hip-hop circles. Having him on board signals Nde’feyo Entertainment’s zeal to expand the appeal and reach of the UMP Festival and Awards within the country and beyond the borders, according to Limwame.

He said the choice of Emtee reflects the needs of the youthful generation in the country, which takes pleasure in urban culture.

“We settled for Emtee following a survey we conducted via different forums, particularly the social media. Results indicated that many young people prefer Emtee. As managers of the festival and the awards, we decided to give Malawians what they want,” said Limwame, adding they were excited to have Emtee as this year’s UMP international headliner.

Emtee is expected to join the list of local artists that have been engaged to perform at the two events. The organisers have engaged Lulu, Piksy, Bucci, Theo Thomson, Hazel Mak and Malinga to perform during the UMP Awards while Sonye, Gwamba, Martse, Saint, Street Fame, Tuno, Charisma, Rita, Hilco, Episods, Pinky Ice, JJC and Suffix will perform at the UMP Festival.

Born Mthembeni Ndevu, Emtee is a South African rapper best known for his debut hit single Roll Up. He is currently signed to Ambitiouz Entertainment, a South African independent record label.
