The National Commission of Science and Technology (NCST) is training secondary school science teachers to enable them to effectively teach science in schools.

Speaking when he opened a week-long workshop at Domasi College of Education in Zomba on Monday, NCST director general Dr Henderson Chimoyo said science and technology plays a big role in the socio-economic development of any country.

Said Chimoyo: “Science and technology has played vital roles in the eradication of diseases and hunger through the advancement of medical and agricultural technologies, among other initiatives.”

He said NCST is training the teachers to keep them abreast of current developments since government realises that effective development and application of science and technology requires adequately trained personnel.

Domasi College of Education acting principal Alnold Mwanza said studies have shown that the quality of education in Malawi is low, especially in mathematics and science subjects.
