Malawi today begins the journey towards organised scrabble when Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe hosts the first tournament for the word game.

Eight-time African scrabble champion, Zambian Paul Kalumba, is behind the tournament which will see the winner carting home K34 000 (about $103).

The tournament will also be an opportunity for scrabble players in the country to begin the process of setting up structures for the game that is only played at social level.

Kalumba told Weekend Nation that scrabble is played in homes in Malawi but not a competitive sport.

“Scrabble is a world renowned sports which is governed by World Scrabble Association. In Africa, there is also an association regulating the sport. Over 30 countries in Africa have scrabble associations. It is our wish to court Malawi to join in the games,” he said.

Kalumba engaged local Malawian players to lead the process of laying the ground work for the tournament and structures for competitive scrabble.

Entrance to the competition is free. Those interested to participate at the tournament can contact Felix Malamula on +265 888 575 720 or Herbert Chandilanga on +265 999 269 780.
