Search for Miss Malawi goes South

The search for the next Miss Malawi goes to the Southern Region this weekend after successful scouting missions in the Central and Northern regions.

Out of nine girls auditioned in Mzuzu on Saturday, four were picked to represent the Northern Region.

Miss Malawi pageant spokesperson Africano Phiri said organisers are satisfied with the level of competition.

“So far so good. We had up to nine girls auditioning for a place in the competition. This is the case despite that most of the universities and colleges in the North are on recess. So we are satisfied with the number of girls who turned up for the Northern Region auditions,” he said.

Phiri said they expect to have a bigger and better event this year. He said this is the case because they expect to have more partners, sponsors and prizes.

“Basically, our expectations are high for the second edition of the pageant. The event last time ended on a high note and it attracted a lot of attention. This time we are courting more partners and sponsors so that prizes for winners are more and high in value,” he said.

Miss Malawi beauty pageant was revived last year after years in hibernation.

Media giants Nation Publications Limited (NPL) and Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) are the ones managing the event. The pageant is held under the theme Managing Overpopulation and Cecilia Khofi is the reigning Miss Malawi.
