Deputy Minister of Education Madalitso Wirima has encouraged secondary school students to develop interest in technical subjects for them to become self-reliant in future.

The deputy minister made the call on Thursday when she visited Masongola Secondary School in Zomba where she appreciated the progress of the Malawi School Certificate of Education examinations in the district.

Coincidentally, some students were sitting a technical drawing examination on the day while others were writing home economics paper I.

Wirima said despite numerous opportunities in technical studies, many students shun them.

She said: “Technical subjects, especially  technical drawing, are subjects that have been there for a long time, but due to lack of support from teachers and lack of interest by students, it has not been fully promoted and utilised by schools.

“I, therefore, appeal to students to develop interest in technical subjects.”

Masongola Secondary School acting head teacher Kondwawaka Saka said most students at the school have expressed interested in technical subjects due to the support from the ministry and teachers.

“We have 26 students that are sitting for technical drawing and one of them is a girl,” she said.

The school also offers other technical subjects such as wood work.
