Nkhata Bay North member of Parliament (MP) Ephraim Mganda Chiume (People’s Party-PP) has expressed worry over the influx of sex workers in the lakeshore district, especially Usisya.

The MP, in whose constituency Usisya is located, said this recently during the district’s World Aids Day commemorations held in the area.

He said the tendency by sex workers to seduce youngmen is dangerous as most of the times the clients are drunk.

Usisya is a predominantly fishing community.

Chiume said the future of the youth in the district is endangered as sex is slowly taking control and changing the culture and lifestyles of the people.

“This is strange behaviour, immorality is too much, something has to be done and done fast,” he said.

One of the sex workers identified as Beauty from Ekwendeni in Mzimba said they flock to places where business is booming and Usisya is one such area.

She said: “Fishers pay us well, they are our frequent clients.”

Apart from Usisya, the contemporary sex business has also colonised Tukombo, Chintheche, Sanga and Nkhata Bay Boma itself. n
