The First Grade Magistrate’s Court in Mzuzu has sentenced three family members for torching a house and a shop in Mzimba district.
The court heard that on August 10 and 11 2017, Peter, Kamoza and Wedson Chione set on fire Julius Tembo’s house and grocery, respectively, at Luhomero in the district.
They were arrested and charged with arson, contrary to Section 337 of the Penal Code.
In mitigation, the brothers asked for court’s leniency arguing they are young and would only waste away if thrown into jail. However, their sentence was maintained.
Northern Region Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said property lost in the fire is worth K4 million. Among the items lost were fertiliser, maize , soya beans, furniture and clothes.
The convicts come from from Jaliya Chiwone Village, Traditional Authority Mtwalo in the district. n
