Siege wins Carlsberg Pool National champs

Lilongwe-based Siege are this year’s K3 million Carlsberg Special Brew National Pool champions after defeating Malumezi from Kasungu 3-2 in the final played over the weekend at Zitherepano in Mangochi.

To make it to the final, Siege, which represented the Central Region at the tournament, defeated the Eastern Region representatives White House 3-0 in the semi-finals.

Siege coach Owen Phiri said his charges played to instructions.

“The players were spirited and played as instructed. Meanwhile, we are looking forward to better performances in other tournaments,” he said.

Malawi Pool Association (Mapa) president Chikondi Mbewe thanked sponsors and pool players that participated in the tournament for maintaining discipline.

“Our sponsors and all pool players deserve a pat on the back for displaying good behaviour throughout the tournament. It is our expectation that Carlsberg will continue to be with us,” he said.

For their success, Siege got K650 000 while the runners-up Malumezi walked away with K500 000.

Third-placed Formula One received K300 000 while White House got K200 000 for scooping fourth position.

In other accolades, Chifundo Banda of Siege got Player of the Tournament award and received K20 000.

Carlsberg Malawi Limited senior brands manager (alcoholic) Twikale Chirwa expressed satisfaction with the competition.

“It is nice that the competition has ended well. It was well organised,” he said. n
