Silver back on top

Silver Strikers are back on top of the TNM Super League table after labouring to a narrow 1-0 victory over resilient Red Lions at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe, Blantyre.

The Bankers had to sweat blood for the three points as Red Lions’ compact defence proved tough for the visitors.

It took Silver 77 minutes to get a goal through striker Stain Davie who tapped in a Duncan Nyoni cross.

The Bankers now have 25 points from 11 games as they face Ntopwa FC this afternoon at Kamuzu Stadium.

Silver coach Daniel Kabwe said the Bankers are now set to collect maximum points after struggling to beat the Zomba-based soldiers.

“It was a very difficult game. We are lucky that we have come out with three points. That’s what we came here for.

“Anyway, this is a done and dusted game. We are now looking forward to our next game [against Ntopwa FC].”

Meanwhile, in Mzuzu Nyasa Big Bullets finally collected maximum points after a hardly-fought 1-0 victory over struggling Ekwendeni Hammers at Mzuzu Stadium, thanks to substitute Gomezgani Chirwa’s added on time goal.

The Poeple’s Team remain on position three just below Civil Service United, with 22 points from 11 games.

Bullets coach Callisto Pasuwa said it was a relief to collect maximum points after struggling in the past two games.

“I am happy for the boys,” he said.

The loss meant Ekwendeni have failed to collect maximum points in three consecutive matches since the league resumed.

Coach Etson Kadenge Mwafulirwa accepted the defeat.

“We have lost to a good side. We did everything we could, but it wasn’t our day,” he said.

In Lilongwe, Moyale Barracks stunned Kamuzu Barracks 1-0 through a Leighsman Singini’s goal.

The Mzuzu-based outfit are now on position 10 with 15 points from 12 matches.

Karonga United also collected maximum points after thrashing Mighty Tigers 3-0 at Karonga Stadium with goals from Mphatso Kamanga, Sherrif Shamama and Clement Nyondo.

They have now moved to position eight.
