Silver in Ayami injury blow

TNM Super League defending champions Silver Strikers have suffered an injury blow for their leading striker Asedi Ayami who is feared out for about a month.

Ayami, who was last season’s third leading scorer, collided with Kamuzu Barracks goalkeeper Victor Nangwale on Sunday, according to the Bankers’ assistant coach Hellings Mwakasungula.

“He had just recovered from a series of injuries and we thought he would enjoy an injury-free season. We are so sad for him. It is a big blow,” Mwakasungula said on Tuesday.

Ayami’s injury leaves the responsibility of scoring on Rodrick Gonani with Green Harawa and Tony Chitsulo not so consistent upfront. Ayami has this season scored two goals in four games.

Silver team doctor Charles Phiri Wednesday confirmed that Ayami suffered from a patellar tendon tear “which can be serious if not repaired in time.”

“He might be out for three weeks. We are trying to have him treated at Kamuzu Central Hospital,” said Phiri.

“The patellar tendon works with the muscles in the front of thigh—the quadriceps—to straighten the leg. Patellar tendon tears are common among middle-aged people who play running or jumping sports,” reads website www.orthoinfo.aaos.org.
