Silver itch to dislodge BT United

Defending champions Silver Strikers are looking forward to dislodging Blantyre United at the pinnacle of the TNM Super League table this weekend.

The Bankers travel to Mzuzu to face Moyale Barracks and Kabwafu this afternoon and Sunday’s respectively in their quest to retain the title.

Silver are currently second on the table with 44 points from 21 games, four points short of surprise leaders United.

United are on bye this weekend and the Bankers, therefore, just need four points out of a possible six on offer to dislodge United as they have a better goal difference.

But Silver’s team manager Sibusiso Padambo said their aim is to bag maximum points.

“The importance of both games cannot be overemphasised. Having dropped two points last weekend, when we drew (1-1) against Bullets, we would want to collect full points.

“But we are not putting ourselves under unnecessary pressure. The approach will be normal,” said Padambo.

Winger Dave Moya carries the hopes that have been thrust on his shoulders to lead the Bankers to glory.

Mustafa Salimu, Rhodrick Gonani, Tony Chitsulo and Harvey Nkacha are the other men capable of making a difference for Silver.

They will, however, be without their exciting winger Peter Pindani who is nursing a knee injury.

Moyale, who are on fifth position with 38 points from 23 games, will be fighting to improve on their log standing while Kabwafu have nothing to lose having been condemned to relegation. Even if they win all their remaining games, they will not escape the chop from the top-flight league.

They currently anchor the table with 14 points from 24 games.

In another big clash, Mighty Wanderers, who still have slim chances to win the title, host Civo United at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

The Nomads are on position four with 41 points from 23 games. They will be without playmaker Joseph Kamwendo who is set to start a new lease of life at Mozambican club Liga Maculmana.

Gerald Phiri Jnr is also still recovering from a jaw injury. However, they still have enough armoury in the likes of Victor Mpinganjira, Diverson Chilemba, Mike Kziputa, Mapopa Musukwa, Bongani Kaipa, Cuthbert Sinetre and Anthony Banda.

Civo are on seventh position with 35 points from 24 games.

In another game scheduled for this afternoon, Kamuzu Barracks host Epac at Silver Stadium.
