With the postponement of the most sought after fixture, the Blantyre derby, which features age-old rivals Nyasa Big Bullets and Be Forward Wanderers, the focus in the TNM Super League will be on the showdown between leaders Mafco FC and Silver Strikers.

The Central Bankers are itching to end Mafco’s unbeaten run this afternoon at the latter’s Chitowe Stadium fortress in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota.

The Salima-based Malawi Defence Force (MDF) side is one of the only two teams yet to test defeat in the 16-team top-flight, Civil Service (Civo) United being the other team.

Mafco celebrate beating Wanderers last Saturday

Mafco top the table with 13 points from seven matches, having won three and drawn four.

On the other hand, Silver are third with 10 points from six matches.

Mafco coach Temwa Msuku was an oasis of calm in an interview yesterday, saying the pressure is on Silver.

He said: “In as far as I am concerned, we are the underdogs. If anything, the pressure is on Silver because their target is to win the league and they are coming from a loss.

“They also have an expensively assembled side with talented players. So, we expect a tough game, but we are ready for them and we’ll take the game to them.”

Mafco are coming from a fruitful sojourn to Blantyre where they collected maximum points after beating Mighty Wanderers 1-0 and Ntopwa FC 2-0.

On his part, Silver assistant coach McDonald ‘Anginde’ Mtetemera said they know how Mafco play and they are prepared for the match.

“But obviously the fact that they are at home and  top of the table, gives them a boost,” he said.

Silver had mised fortunes last weekend, thumping Mzuzu Warriors 4-0 before losing to Ekwendeni Hammers 1-0 in Mzuzu.

In other matches today, Tigers FC host rookies Ekwendeni Hammers at Mpira Stadium in Chiwembe Township, Blantyre. Table anchors Chitipa United will be hoping for their first victory when they host Civo at Karonga Stadium.

Moyale Barracks, who are also winless, face Blue Eagles at Mzuzu Stadium while Kamuzu Barracks host Ntopwa FC at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.
