Silver Strikers FC this morning won the TNM Super League championship for the third time on the trot following their 2-1 sweet victory over Mighty Wanderers at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

The flagship league decider was played in an empty stadium as per Sulom and FAM’s verdicts following the nasty scenes that occurred in the initial match played in Balaka on December 28 2013 where a Nomads fan Lemiasi Josta lost his life as the pandemonium turned too ugly.

For their feat, the Bankers will cart home a cool K9 million (about $22 500) winners prize and the result meant the Nomads hopes of finishing fourth in order to qualify for the K2 million (about $5 000) prize, fell by their way side and could only manage a distant sixth-place finish.

A goal in each half from industrious winner Ndaziona Chatsalira and diminutive forward Green Harawa were enough to put the Bankers in the comfort zone.

Timothy Chitedze pulled one back for the Nomads towards the end, but it wasn’t enough and it was never going to be.

Silver captain Lucky Malata said they were happy to retain the title.

“After fairing poorly in cup competitions, it feels good to have retained the championship. The national league is the real deal and we are very excited,” said Malata.

His Nomads counterpart Richard Chipuwa said the Silver deserved to win.

“We tried our best, but I think Silver were the better side and congratulations to them,” said Chipuwa.

This was the eighth time for the Bankers to win the title since its inception in 1986. The last time the Nomads won it was in 2006 under Zimbabwean tactician Rahman Gumbo.
