Silver suffer damages in Karonga fracas

Silver Strikers say they have suffered a lot of damage from the fracas that occurred during their abandoned TNM Super League match against Karonga United at Karonga Stadium on Sunday.

The match was abandoned towards the end when referee Mercy Kayira awarded the hosts a penalty before changing her decision after consulting one of her assistants.

At the time of the abandonment, the Central Bankers were leading 1-0 through Blessings Tembo’s strike.

In an interview on Monday, Silver chief executive officer Thoko Chimbali said: “We are lucky that there were no serious injuries on our part. Only [defender] Mark Fodya sustained an injury after a tear gas canister landed on his back.

“But our team bus was attacked and three side windows were smashed, my vehicle was also damaged so too that of our coach [Dan Kabwe] which has a huge crack.”

Silver left the stadium using Karonga United team bus as a safety measure.

Super League of Malawi  general secretary Williams Banda said they are waiting for reports from relevant stakeholders. “Upon conducting investigations and going through the reports, a determination will be made,” he said.
