Flames first-choice goalkeeper Simplex Nthala suffered what seems a serious left shoulder injury while on duty for his Mozambique side, Vilankulo FC on Sunday.

He was taken off the pitch during a game against Costa do Sol in Maputo.

Nthala, who has let in two goals in the last five Flames games, will be out for nine days.

“They have put me on plaster of Paris (PoP) and I will go for further examination after the nine days to see if either I can begin light training. I am hopeful the injury is not severe,” he said in a telephone interview.

The former MTL Wanderers custodian had reportedly dived for a low cross when, after grabbing the ball, a Sol striker, attempting to score, hit him behind with a knee.

Vilankulo, which is based in Inhambane Province, currently lies fifth on 17 points from 11 games.

Other Mozambican teams, which are home to Malawians, are Ferroviaro de Nampula and Liga Maculmana. The former are third on the 14-member log table while the latter, who are the defending champions, lie ninth.

Striker Sankhani Nyirenda plays for Nampula as a right winger whereas Zicco Mkanda plays as a central midfielder for Maculmana. Mkanda and Nyirenda are usually out-and-out strikers.

“I am yet to score in the league, but I have some cup goals. I am a kind of a second striker as I link up with the lone striker while operating from the right,” said Nyirenda.
