“She is not fit enough following her injury and it would have been a gamble to include her in the squad. The decision was also made in consultation with the team doctor.

“I felt it would not have been proper to include someone who is struggling with fitness. Of course, she is a key player, but there are more tournaments coming up and once she gains full fitness, she will be back in the squad,” he said.

On her part, Simtowe-Msowoya said she understood her exclusion.

“I expected it because I was not fully fit. I knew that considering my condition, chances of making it in the the final squad were slim.

“The leg is still giving me problems, but there has been some improvement,” she said.

Simtowe-Msowoya is considered one of the best attackers on the domestic scene as well as on the continent. n
