Six runners qualify for C’Wealth Games

Six runners will represent Malawi at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland following their successive trials Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) conducted at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe last weekend.

Francis Khanje will carry the national flag in the 27 kilometres (km) marathon after crossing the finish line in 1hour, 33 minutes 59 seconds to outsmart 10 contestants while Tereza Master did it in the ladies’ section in 2:04:17 hours.

Golden Gunde excelled in the men’s 200m and 400m races, but he has been selected to run in the 200m race in Scotland.

Faith Labana will run in the ladies’ 800m distance at the international contest for clocking 2:26 minutes during trials whereas Chancy Master will do it in the 1 500m. He completed the race in four minutes.

Kefasi Kasten has completed the list of qualified runners for the international games following his splendid performance in the 5 000m and 1 500m races. He settled for the second slots in each of the races.

In the 5 000m race, he crossed the line in 15:01 minutes, 33 seconds behind winner Master. In 1 500m event, he ran in 4:12 minutes, 12 seconds behind winner Master as well.

According to AAM president Godfrey Phiri, they conducted time trials to ensure that the country’s representatives at the Commonwealth Games are selected on merit.

Phiri said the identified athletes will leave the country on June 29 for a week-long camp training in London before proceeding to Scotland for a final two-week-long camp.
