Only one shadow Parliamentarian in Rumphi Central Constituency on Saturday showed up to a political debate that was organised by Misa-Malawi chapter in conjunction with Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS).

Speaking in an interview, moderator of the debate, Twesa Takula, said it was sad to see that only Charles Mhango showed up for the debate when constituency has seven candidates and the rest shunned it.

Takula said they could not have done otherwise, but to go ahead and have the debate with only one candidate out of five who confirmed to be available during the debate when they were contacted.

“This shows lack of commitment. Things are not supposed to be like that because voters want to know what they have in their manifestos and if they fail to turn up, it means they are not committed,” said Takula.

Nyalifie Mtambalika, information officer for Misa-Malawi secretariat, said it was unfortunate to see that shadow MPs avoided the debate yet it was arranged for them to sell themselves and their manifestos.

Rumphi Central Constituency has seven aspiring MP’s, Peter Chihana of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Enoch Chihana of the Alliance for Democracy (Aford), Chiyandika Nyirenda an independent candidate, Norman Nyirenda of the People’s Party (PP), Wells Muzakwacha of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Charles Mhango and Alick Yagontha Munthali both independents.
