Soccer season kicks off March 30

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) says as per tradition,  the 2019 football season will roll out on March 30 with the Chifundo Charity Shield.

The Charity Shield is organised by FAM and its proceeds go towards charity.

Matola: It will involve four teams

The football governing body’s commercial and marketing director Limbani Matola yesterday said the tournament will be played over two days and it will involve four teams.

He said the four teams are TNM Super League champions Nyasa Big Bullets, Fisd Challenge Cup winners Be Forward Wanderers, Airtel Top 8 and Carlsberg Cup champions Blue Eagles and Masters Security FC, respectively.

“The selection criteria by the organising committee was the winners of the four top tournaments.

“The Charity Shield will be played on March 30 and 31 at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre because the past two editions have been held in the Central Region and we want to give a chance to the fans in the South to sample the event as well,” he said.

Super League of Malawi (Sulom) general secretary Williams Banda said the kick-off date of the top-flight league will be determined by the new executive committee that will be ushered into office on March 2.

However, FAM director of competitions and communications Gomezgani Zakazaka said the tentative kickoff date is April 6.

“But that will be subject to approval by the Sulom executive and the sponsors,” he said.

Zakazaka also said their Airtel Top 8 tentative kickoff date is during the weekend of April 13-14. n
