Soldiers still dominate SL top scorers’ list

The 2014 TNM Super League second round has fetched 329 goals after 134 games, but there is little movement among the leading scorers; suggesting that surpassing the 18-goal mark would be difficult.

Interestingly, the top-four scorers are all drawn from the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) teams, with burly Moyale Barracks striker Dues Nkutu leading the Golden Boot chase on 11 goals from 18 games.

The only worry is that Nkutu has now gone three games without scoring whereas Red Lions’ Kumbukani Mwambene is second on 10 goals from 18 games and on nine goals is yet another soldier Kelvin Hanganda from Kamuzu Barracks.

Other soldiers Kalisto Kalinda, who scored in a 2-0 win over Epac in Lilongwe, and Moyale’s Gastin Simkonda are tied on fourth-best scorers with eight.

They are trailed by police officers Schumacher Kuwali, Micium Mhone, Charles Ngosi and John Malidadi Jnr, all of Blue Eagles, at seven goals each alongside Azam Tigers’ Bright Munthali. Ngosi and Malidadi netted once each when the Eagles downed Blantyre United 2-1 to go top on a superior aggregate having tied on 37 points with second-placed Moyale and third-positioned Big Bullets.

Abraham Kamwendo claimed the lone goal for the third from the bottom United.

Munthali’s effort also enabled Tigers to a 1-1 draw with Moyale at Mzuzu Stadium on Saturday, then added the second the following day when the Kau Kau thrashed Karonga United 4-0 with Isaac Kaliyati grabbing a hat-trick.

The Super League of Malawi gave the update on Sunday indicating that the Eagles, with 39 goals, are the highest scoring team this far while Karonga United have let in the most 37 goals.

“So far 329 goals have been scored and it is now a three-horse race at the top. Epac lost the home invincibility while Silver Strikers drew their first away game. Rookies Airborne Rangers and Karonga United are yet to win away,” reads the Sulom summary.
