In a dramatic twist of events, some Mighty Wanderers fans have said they are not happy with the decision that the supporters committee should not hold elections ahead of the new season.
A meeting involving the club’s supporters held at Wanderers Club on Wednesday proposed that for the sake of continuity, the club should not have elections for both the executive and supporters committees.
However, some of the team’s zonal committee members from Bangwe, Ndirande 1 and 2, Makhetha, Namiyango and Kachere have since written the club’s board of trustees and the executive committee expressing their displeasure with the decision.
The supporters have since come up with a task force that comprises, among others, Hastings Kalumbi, Herbert Mapira and Slyvester Luka to push for the supporters’ elections.
Part of the letter signed by some members of the zonal subcommittees, reads: “We wish to avail ourselves the opportunity to hold elections for the supporters’ committee at the end of this month. The intention is to ensure that the team is in a position to improve on performance and win silverware.
“As you are aware, as per our tradition, supporters’ elections are held every two years and the tenure of office for the current supporters’ committee has since elapsed.”
Another Central Region-based fan, Kim Kamau, also said he was of the view that elections for both the executive and supporters’ committee should be held.
“There is no doubt that those that are in the current committees and have done well will be ushered back into office, but it is important that we hold elections other than just fill the vacant positions,” said Kamau.
However, the Nomads flamboyant supporters’ committee chairperson Yona Malunga argued that the decision not to hold elections for the supporters committee was made by representatives of the zonal subcommittees.
“It is issues like these that bring confusion. If they had genuine concerns, then they should have raised them during the meeting that we had last week, but they never did. As far as I am concerned, their claims have no basis at all.
“But it is an internal issue and we’ll consult accordingly without unnecessarily blowing the issue out of proportion,” said Malunga.
On their part, the club’s chairperson George Chamangwana and board of trustees vice-chairperson James Chuma assured that the issue would be looked into.
Said Chuma: “We are in receipt of the letter from a section of the fans, but we’ll have to discuss the issue amicably with the executive and the supporters’ committee and then map the way forward. We wouldn’t want to create an impression as if there is in-house fighting at Wanderers.”
