Sonye’s magic spells Tay Grin

It was a highly-charged night show featuring three of the country’s recognisable faces of urban music-Tay Grin, Theo Thomson and DJ Sonye at the Blue Elephant, Blantyre, last Friday.

It was not a live battle of the three, though DJ Sonye was more forceful on stage.

His diverse, self-possession and energetic stage play earned him a natural rendezvous with the audience.

It was not a dull night. All the artists wandered on stage right on time. The audience eagerly anticipated fun and they did not grumble until Saturday morning.

However, neither the mammoth crowd nor the small space and stage-which gave minimal protection of performers-weakened the enthusiasm of both the artists and the fans.

Tay Grin’s new song Kanda was a bit flat, but Two by Two brought the crowd back to life. Some patrons said if Tay Grin is to maintain his public image, he should keep on having energy when he is performing alone.

“If you have noticed, Tay Grin plucked too much courage when he jumped on stage alongside DJ Sonye. But he needs to do the same with his other songs,” said Gerald Mende, one of the patrons at the show.

The mood was romantic during Theo’s set. He stole people’s hearts with Magic and continued with Maybe Tomorrow. There was a bit of wearisome response during Tay Grin’s and Theo’s sets until DJ Sonye provided the audience the most bouncing performance of the night. He engaged the audience into his music. He dished out his old classics such as Ukadutsa.

Organised by Tay Grin’s entertainment company, Black Rhyno Entertainment, the gig was part of Tay Grin’s celebration of music victory, including Video of the Year award bagged at this year’s Urban Music Party (UMP) festival.
