SOS Children’s Villages hands over village to CK

As one way of ensuring no child grows up alone and that all children attain education regardless of their vulnerability, SOS Children’s Villages Malawi on Saturday handed over a children’s village, kindergarten and primary school to the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa.

The infrastructures— comprising the children’s village, four staff houses, office buildings, guest house and playgrounds— were constructed with support from SOS Children’s Norway with funding from Norwegian Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Chikwawa on Saturday, Odd Fellows president Morten Buan, who disclosed that they pumped 25 million Norwegian Krones (about K2.1 billion) into the project, said he was happy to see that their effort had resulted in the village and schools.

“We have for more than three years raised money for SOS Children’s Villages Malawi to build this village in Ngabu. We hope this village will provide a safe home for 150 children and a better childhood with good education and healthcare to 2 000 vulnerable children here in Ngabu,” said Buan.

In his remarks, SOS Children’s Villages Malawi board chairperson Gray Nthinda said the organisation is relieved that it will help in alleviating some of the challenges needy children are facing by giving them a home and an education.

Said Nthinda: “As an organisation, we are strongly committed to supporting vulnerable children in the country by ensuring that no child grows up alone. That is exactly what we are going to do here in Ngabu. Our staff, with the help of communities and traditional leaders, will conduct an assessment in the villages to find children fit to fill this village.”
