SOS Village on Thursday donated books and school bags worth over K20 million to 13 schools in Blantyre Urban and Blantyre Rural at an event that took place at Thanthwe Primary School in Traditional Authority Machinjiri.

Speaking during the handover, SOS Village programmes coordinator Alexander Ngomo said the initiative aims at enhancing quality education in the organisation’s impact area.

“We work with community social support systems such as parents and teachers associations and village development committees to ensure that donated materials are used for the intended purpose,” he said.

In his remarks, Blantyre Rural deputy district education manager Saulos Namani described the donation as timely, saying lack of books is a big challenge facing schools in Blantyre.

“The gesture is complementing government’s efforts through the National Reading Programme to ensure that learners are able to read when they reach Standard Four,” he said.

Thanthwe Primary School head teacher Ivy Bwanali Chunga said the books will help solve some of the problems that were affecting teaching and learning processes at the institution.

“Learners will now be able to take the books home to study on their own and benefit from the help from members of their families,” she said. n
