Sounds of disaster

Jah people, this world is a stage and we are just actors playing our part.

On stage, it is interesting even musicians have risen to play a role in raising funds for thousands displaced by floods which left us and our lead vocalist, President Peter Mutharika, singing a song of sorrow and SOS.

Blessed is the hand that giveth, sings Lucky Dube. Those who persuade others to give give twice, I say.

Thumbs up for the rare display of solidarity marked with three music shows in three cities for one cause—showing some love to the worst hit.

The shows slated for Saturday in Mzuzu, Lilongwe and Blantyre show artists’ power to bring smiles to the afflicted and comfort to those seeking answers in the skies from whence the destructive rains poured down.

May the fun-seekers, the instant beneficiaries, support the cause by coming in large numbers and paying at the door and in kind.

Shame on shameless souls planning to sneak in without paying.

Off stage

The creative sector is larger than just music. Musicians’ vocal involvement makes one question glaring: Where are other artists—the poets, fashion designers, filmmakers, painters, carvers and other creative minds—in this season of need?

The silence is deafening.

Aside

The stage set for the ‘State of Disaster’ proclaimed by Mutharika seems to be crowded with numerous hands playing one and only one role—collecting money and other valuables.

This scramble for survivors’ cash and relief is not fishy. It smells like fresh manure for another Cashgate, except we are worried about potential siphoning of things meant to make survivors’ lives better.

In drama, you know everything is wrong when thousands taking centre-stage to play a role better left to one actor.

Government must step up to its starring role while the rest embrace their noble slots as supporting actors, extras and Z-listers.

Ireland’s problems may be English opportunities, but mismanagement of disaster funds and items is as scandalous—the rich stealing from their poor kindred.

Government needs to put its house in order by laying dos and don’ts to avoid another sacrilege. This disorder will benefit nobody except crooks in sheep skins.
