South Police Commissioner’s trophy kicks off

Malawi Police Service (MPS) Commissioner’s Trophy for the Southern Region rolled into action on Saturday at the Police Training School (PTS) ground in Limbe, Blantyre.

Commissioner of Police (South) Sladge Yoosuf said the K2 million competition, which 14 police stations in his fold are contesting in football, netball, volleyball and athletics, aims to keep the officers physically fit and identify quality athletes that will represent the region at the Inspector General’s (IG) Trophy in April.

“It is not good for a police officer to be loafing around without engaging in any sporting activity because the nature of our job requires strength and energy. Therefore, we need to keep ourselves fit while we interact with the general public to promote our social bonds,” he said.

“We also take this opportunity to come up with high quality Southern Region Select that will carry our flag at the IG’s Trophy where we want to defend the honours.”

MPS regional  sports desk coordinator (South) Francis Tembo said the competition, which will be played on home-and-away knockout basis, will run for two months.

“Football champions will receive K500 000 while runners-up will get K250 000. In netball, winners and runners-up will get K300 000 and K100 000, respectively. Volleyball champions will receive K150 000 while the second-placed team will cart home K100 000. Athletics category winners will get K30 000,” he said.

During the opening games, Blantyre Eagles football team beat Limbe Police 5-1 through Andy Kondwerani’s brace while Mark Njunga, Shadreck Mphambo and Alex Njunga scored a goal apiece. Zondiwe Mtewa scored Limbe’s consolation goal.

In netball, Blantyre Police earned bonus points after Limbe failed to turn up. In volleyball, Limbe also got free points as Blantyre did not show up. In athletics, Thoko Tchangachanga of Soche Police triumphed. He was followed by Emmanuel Musasa (Limbe Police) and Mussa Eddo (Southern Region Police Headquarters). n
