Southern Region Police commends public

Southern Region Police have commended the public for playing a role in reducing crime in 2016.

Commissioner of Police for Southern Region Demster Chigwenembe told guests to a year-end party at Comesa Hall in Blantyre that police managed to reduce crime in the region by 26 percent and traffic offences by 68 percent.

He said this was an achievement compared to 2015 when crime was reduced by 3.8 percent and traffic offences by 16.5 percent.

Chigwenembe, while congratulating his officers, said police owed this to members of the public that were actively involved in safety and security.

“They involved themselves in crime prevention initiatives such as conducting meetings and neighbourhood watch, among others,” he said.

Commissioner of Police Innocent Botomani, who is director of finance at National Police Headquarters in Lilongwe, represented Inspector General (IG) of Police Lexter Kachama at the party.

Botomani said the IG regretted the loss of 66 officers, most of whom died as they attempted to prevent crime. n
