Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) will this weekend hold a bonanza at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) to set the hype for the new season next week.

Sozoball spokesperson Kondwani Kabowa said yesterday that although they have no corporate sponsorship for both the bonanza and the league for the seventh year in a row, they are not backing down on their campaign to make ‘basketball happen.’

“Still, we have no sponsorship for both the bonanza and the league. But that cannot stop us from promoting the game and keeping the players active in our fold. We will use the K60 000 we have acquired through the registration of teams to run the bonanza. We will try our best to live by our means,” he said.

According to Kabowa, 10 teams, including four college outfits, have registered for the bonanza, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday.

The teams are defending champions Bricks, Magang’a, Crazy Warriors, Cobbe Barracks, Lox 360, Mikoko, Chanco Hawks, Poly Bobcats, Poly Panthers and CoM Lumbricals.

Bricks’ senior player Chikondi Mwendera and Magang’a coach/player Hope Chisamanga said they are ready for the bonanza, which will be spiced-up by some acrobatics, disco and a braii.

“Sponsorship has become a perennial problem for our league but that cannot frustrate our passion for the sport,” Mwendera said. n
