The 2017 Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) season starts tomorrow with Malawi Blood Transfusion Services (MBTS) sponsored Division Two Tournament.
According to Sozobal development chairperson Ronald Mbekeani, the tournament will see 11 teams battling it out at the Polytechnic basketball court and the Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC).
“We are proud to kick-start the new season with the second-division tournament. We urge all basketball lovers to come to the venues in their large numbers to feast their eyes on exciting action,” he said.
Competing teams in pool A are Mulanje Strong Bulls, Poly Wildcats, Lions, Cobbe Barracks, Troopers and Jacaranda. Pool B has Firestorms, Catholic Universty, Thunders, Bangwe Nightmares, Malawi University of Science and Technology (Must) and Kamuzu College of Nursing (KCN).
During Sozobal annual general meeting (AGM) at BYC last week, the league’s chairperson Stabene Malange said the Division Two tournament will precede Division One league and ladies tournament on the following day.
She said a wheelchair basketball tournament sponsored by UGI Insurance will follow on Monday at the BYC.
Previously, Sozobal only had a competition for elite players but now contest has been split into Division One and Division Two categories. Ladies basketball has been revived while Wheelchair contest has been incorporated into the league.n
