Spare health workers from witchcraft—Malawi VP

Malawi Vice-President Khumbo Kachali, who is also Minister of Health, on Tuesday pleaded with people in Lilongwe Mapuyu North to spare health workers from witchcraft, if they are to remain working in their area.

Kachali made the plea in the House after MP for the area Christina Chiwoko had asked the minister to deploy health personnel at the facility which she said has vacant staff houses. She said the facility only operates once a week due to lack of staff.

In his response, Kachali advised Chiwoko to plead with traditional leaders in her area to appeal to their subjects to spare health workers from witchcraft practices.

“The present situation exists because health workers that are posted to Lemwe Health Centre are always subjected to unwelcome and mysterious happenings. These acts of witchcraft are the ones that left Lemwe Health Centre without resident health workers,” said Kachali.

He said as an intervention, the Lilongwe District Health Office (DHO) conducts weekly outreach clinics at the health centre.

“Lilongwe DHO has, however, posted one medical assistant to Lemwe Health Centre,” said Kachali.
