A 10-member Special Olympics squad yesterday left for United States of America (USA) where they will participate in the Los Angeles Summer Games due to start tomorrow.

Special Olympics Malawi (SOM) board chairperson Peter Mazunda, speaking at a press briefing on Sunday, said the Malawi team will feature in aquatics, athletics, badminton, basketball and half marathon, among others.

Mazunda said the games will offer persons with intellectual disabilities a great opportunity to showcase their potential.

“We are very optimistic that the Malawi squad will bring medals to the country. The team will be hosted for nine days from July 25 to August 2,” he said.

Malawi National Councils for Sports (MNCS) executive secretary George Jana urged the delegation to maintain discipline and avoid doing things that could dent the image of the country.

Said Jana: “You will be flying Malawi’s flag at the international scene. I, therefore, ask you to maintain discipline till the end of the games.”

MNCS contributed K16 million ($32 000) towards the athletes’ air-tickets, visas and camping.
