Special Olympics holds Family Health Forum in KA

Special Olympics Malawi (SOM), an organisation that provides sports training and athletic competitions for persons with intellectual disabilities, has urged parents and guardians of such children protect them from stigma, discrimination or abuse.

Speaking during a Family Health Forum in Karonga, SOM-Irish Aid project coordinator Leonard Nkosi said if persons with intellectual disabilities are given proper care, they can achieve remarkable things in life.

“It should be noted that with careful approach and proper care, such persons can achieve extraordinary things in life like winning gold medals at international games.

Malawian athletes won medals at World Summer Games that took place in Los Angeles, USA.

Willy Phiri, whose 12- year-old daughter Clara won two gold medals at the Games, said Family Health Forums are instrumental in the upbringing of children with intellectual disabilities.

Phiri said with the knowledge he gains from the forums, he is able to raise his daughter well. n
