It was all smiles for Mzuzu Prison inmates on Wednesday when Sport Malawi Limited (SML) gave them two footballs, two pump cons and a netball.

SML representative from the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, Elizabeth Rogers, said her office felt duty-bound to assist when prison officers asked for the sports equipment.

Receiving the donation on behalf of Mzuzu Prison FC, captain Ken Kaunda thanked SML for the gesture, saying sports will help them to build better characters.

“Participating in sport will re-enforce our honesty levels besides achieving a healthy mind in a healthy body,” said Kaunda.

On her part, Northern Region sports development officer Georgina Msowoya said while sports help prisoners relieve stress, it also contributes to positive self-image; hence, the donation will help speed up rehabilitation of the prisoners.

SML director for the Northern Region, Samuel Mayuni, said so far their office has donated sport equipment to Saved By the Ball, Chisomo Ideas FC and other teams in Mzuzu.

Meanwhile, coach for Mzuzu Prison Macbeth Wasambo, said the donation came at a time Mzuzu Prison Reformatory School planned to join the Copa Coca-Cola competition, but had no equipment.
