All is set for a two-day sports science and management seminar at the College of Medicine’s Sports Complex this Monday.

The sports facility is doing the groundwork for the establishment of a High Performance Centre.

A high-profile team of South African sports science experts led by Kobus van der Walt, University of Pretoria’s (UP) director of Sports Campus and High Performance Centre, arrived in the country Saturday afternoon to make presentations at the seminar.

Walt, Professor Pieter Kruger and Dr Steve Ball also from UP, will make their presentations alongside College of Medicine’s  Associate Professor Chiwoza Banda, Dr Linda Chokhoto and Arox Kamng’ona.

“We will share practices and talk about what works for us. We do not want to be seen telling people in Malawi what to do, rather we want to contribute to help Malawi people to find solutions in sports,” Walt said on arrival.

“If you want to achieve high performance in modern sports, it is important to invest in High Performance Programme. We want to address a wide spectrum of issues on sports science, management of athletes,” he said.

The complex’s manager Gus Banda said they expected a wide range of stakeholders such as sports journalists, administrators, physical education teachers and coaches to attend the seminar.

“We have the talent, but the challenge is to nurture it. My involvement with the Malawi netball Queens and the Flames has taken us somewhere, but we need to share our vision as some do not get what we mean,” said Banda.
