Newly-appointed Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development Grace Chiumia is set to preside over a meeting with sports associations tomorrow in Blantyre.

A week ago, former line minister Francis Kasaila announced his intention to hold the meeting with associations to brainstorm on problems they face in the development of sports.

But President Peter Mutharika moved Kasaila from the sports ministry to Industry, Trade and Tourism, replacing him with Chiumia.

Malawi National Council of Spots (MNCS) executive secretary George Jana yesterday said the meeting will take place as scheduled.

“Nothing has changed. The newly-appointed minister [Grace Chiumia] will preside over the meeting to be held at National Bank Training Centre,” he said.

Chiumia confirmed that she will attend the meeting.

“I have got an invitation to attend the meeting and I have confirmed that I will attend because it is important for the development of sports,” she said.

The minister added: “I know the challenges that sports associations face, which cannot be solved the government alone. Associations should think of ways and means of generating more money to complement what they get from government.”

Sports associations welcomed the initiative, saying it will provide a platform to present their problems to the government.
