He was speaking on the sidelines of a combined Action for Adolescents Sports Festival at Nyachilenga Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in the district.

Malunga said there was high dropout in Nyachilenda and Mchere zones before the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) funded initiative started.

He said: “Action for Adolescents Sports Festivals have proved to be a working tool in addressing or reducing primary school dropouts. With the introduction of sports disciplines, more pupils do not miss classes and participate in such sporting activities after knocking off.

Speaking on behalf of the primary education adviser (PEA), Nyachilenda CDSS head teacher Reuben Malembanji said there is tangible achievement regarding dropouts in the two zones.

He said more primary school pupils are interested in returning to school to participate in sporting activities.

Malembanji commended Nsanje District Council and Unicef for the initiative. n
